This will NOT advance the cause of stopping bottled water in my opinion. Main stream media and water exploiters will cite these parodies to paint those fighting the bottled water industry as kooks. All the media will do is to show a picture of the obvious parody, but not give a link as to where it can be found or cite that it is an intentional lie. Factual information will be grouped along with these off the wall statements to discredit the efforts of hard working local groups (IMHO).
If the bottled water company was to create a web site to discredit honest, hard working enviro-activist, this is the type site that I could invision. Perhaps these people think that they are aiding the cause, but I do not see it that way. Yes, I found many of the statements ‘comical’, but knowing how the other side works, I can see more harm than good coming from this.
I tend to agree, though the absurdity of the ads – when coupled with a knowledge of what the bottled water industry’s been saying – does make me laugh.
After all, the industry-funded enjoybottledwater.org site – a place for kooky commentary if there ever was one – did once use a picture of an Australiam firefighter giving a koala a drink from a plastic bottle, and suggested this was proof that bottled water was good for wildlife.
Still, on the whole I think you’re right, and that this campaign was probably designed to generate as much noise for the agency as the cause.
